Chiropractic Care - Dry Needling - Massage Therapy - MLS Laser Therapy
Chiropractic is a licensed health care profession that emphasizes the body's ability to heal itself. Treatment typically involves manual therapy, often including spinal manipulation. Other forms of treatment, such as exercise and nutritional counseling, may be used as well.
Chiropractors approach patient care in a manner similar to that used in conventional medicine. They interview the patient, obtain a detailed health history, perform an examination, do tests, and develop a working diagnosis. They then develop a management plan, start treatment, and monitor the patient’s progress. Chiropractors often treat problems related to the musculoskeletal system.
The manual treatment methods used by chiropractors range from stretching and sustained pressure to specific joint manipulations, which are usually delivered by hand and involve a quick and gentle thrust. The purpose of the manipulations is to improve joint motion and function. Manipulations are most commonly done on the spine, but other parts of the body may also be treated in this way.
Chiropractic neurology is an evidence-based model of care which utilizes diagnostic and treatment approaches that can measure and improve the function of the brain and nervous system in health and disease.
When joints are not moving they are not able to trigger muscle spindle or Golgi Tendon messages to the brain at the capacity of a joint that is moving. This lack of movement causes the brain to feel a higher level of pain than a joint that is moving.
There are many ways to move a joint. Stretch, Compression, Massage are all fantastic ways to move a joint. Chiropractic found it's specialty with Speed. Chiropractors, in particular, are known for their High Velocity(Fast Speed) - Low Amplitude(Low Force) adjustments. Studies have shown that speed can trigger muscle spindle activity faster than any other mode of joint mobility which is why Chiropractors get results!
The Diversified Technique is the most commonly used adjustment method by chiropractors, thus making it a perfect starting point for beginners. This type of adjustment involves a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust that usually results in a popping noise. The goal of this technique is to restore proper movement and alignment of spine and joint dysfunction.
Named after its founder, Dr. Clarence Gonstead, this hands-on technique often involves adjusting the lower back or pelvis as the patient lies on their side. The Gonstead adjustment addresses misalignments and pinched nerves, helping to reduce pain and increase mobility.
The Activator Method is unique in that it utilizes a small, handheld instrument called the Activator Adjusting Instrument. This allows chiropractors to deliver gentle impulse force to the spine with the aim of restoring motion to a specific spinal vertebra or joint, without applying direct force to the body. It’s an excellent technique for beginners to know as it is less intimidating than manual techniques and offers a great alternative for those who may be nervous about the traditional ‘cracking’ sounds.
The Thompson or Drop technique uses a special chiropractic table which has sections that drop slightly when a thrust is applied to the spine. This technique allows for the thrust while, at the same time, dropping the section of the table. This drop reduces the amount of energy needed for the adjustment. It’s a useful method to familiarize oneself with, as it combines traditional manual adjustments with modern technologies.
Flexion-Distraction is a gentle, non-thrusting kind of spinal manipulation. The chiropractor uses a special table that stretches the spine and utilizes a pumping action on the intervertebral disc instead of direct force. This method is particularly useful for those suffering from disc injuries or other conditions that might prevent them from receiving traditional adjustments.
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic adjustment focused on the sacrum and pelvic alignment, aiming to improve biomechanical function and nervous system communication. It is commonly utilized during pregnancy to help optimize pelvic balance and potentially alleviate discomfort, facilitating an easier and safer birthing process.
